Tool tips from Fickes, the plumber
As the third-generation owner of Fickes Plumbing in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Terry Fickes grew up learning how to manage a business.
“Don’t be afraid to work for a profit, instead of just breaking even,” says the plumber.
Although Fickes Plumbing is now a one-man business, Fickes continues to work with his crews. He says managers should be willing to get involved in the jobs. “You can’t just sit behind a desk all day and expect your crew to do all the work,” says Fickes.
When working with customers, Fickes says honesty is key. “Sit down with your customers to prepare the estimate or contract, then follow through on what you promise,” says the plumber.
