What’s in a business construction owner’s toolbox?

Tom Popa  //  Popa Construction //  Odessa, Fla.

When he was younger, Thomas Popa thought  construction business was all about the customer and their projects. And, while he understands that this is still a critical part of the job, he has found a higher purpose.

“It’s all about being able to provide work for a great group of employees and subcontractors,” says Popa, who runs Popa Construction in Odessa, Fla. “I know how important it is for them to provide for their families, and it’s a great feeling to be able to help.”

This sentiment has been a hallmark of the Popa bloodline, which includes various small business owners centered on the skilled labor workforce. “The trades are in our blood,” Popa says. “I have learned too many skills to list, and I’m always trying to learn more. But learning how to deal with people is the best asset to have.”

Popa honed his craft in the family business and through a non-family member, John Twardecki, who took him under his wing and imparted his wisdom. “It’s really simple,” he says. “Be on time, work hard, put forth a good effort, be prepared, go the extra mile and, finally, be coachable and have patience.”

For Tom Popa, these tools are essentials in a business construction owner’s toolbox:
