Building Your Workshop in 2018
With an array of new tools and equipment available, manufacturers will not disappoint in 2018.

Innovation and emerging new technologies mean your workshop can be more functional and efficient than ever. Whether corded or non-corded, the tools of 2018 will pack a punch of unmatched power when building your workshop in 2018. Battery-powered tools and combo kits are trending again for the New Year, along with ergonomic features and smart capabilities.
Combo kits can be not only an affordable way to obtain your tools, but a sensible one. Cole Gagnon, product manager for Porter Cable, says the company’s 3 Tool Combo Kit is ideal for both general contractors and remodelers who take on a variety of projects, including trim carpentry and furniture building.
“By providing Pros with a 16GA Finish Nailer, 18GA Brad Nailer, 3⁄8-inch Crown Stapler, 6-Gallon Air Compressor, and an air hose, they have the performance, durability and versatility to complete their projects at an affordable price point,” Gagnon says.
Another undeniable growth area when building your workshop in 2018 is in the cordless option for tools. The convenience level of being freed from the cord, yet maintaining optimum power, is important for the Pro. Makita has made strides in this area and touts the benefits of going cordless.
“It’s extremely exciting to bring to market a true cordless compact router for the professional,” says Andrew Camp, product manager, residential, Makita U.S.A., who adds that the company’s 18V LXT Router comes with all of the accessories that accompanied the corded equivalent. Those accessories also will work with the cordless option, so no value is lost in the user’s previous accessory investment.
DeWalt Product Manager David Bertoni says that a 100 percent battery-operated tool eliminates the hassles of using gas, a compressor or a hose. The company’s 20V 18GA Brad Nailer allows users to tackle jobs both large and small with the features of a pneumatic tool and the convenience of cordless, he adds.
“Professionals continue to seek out cordless options to increase productivity without sacrificing performance,” Bertoni says. “The DeWalt 20V 18GA Brad Nailer provides them with the performance they demand while increasing productivity.”
Ergonomics are still a big deal to the Pro, and companies continue to innovate in this area. Skilsaw is touting its reciprocating saw that reduces vibration by up to 35 percent.
“Pros typically look for tools that provide the best results, last a long time and are comfortable to use,” says Bogdan Moldovan, product manager, Skilsaw. “Reduced vibration gives the Pro more control and faster cuts. Less friction in the drive train also provides longer life.”
When building your workshop in 2018, one-handed tools will again have a presence, which could make life much easier for the user. Milwaukee’s one-handed reciprocating saw category now includes a brushless 18V offering.
Milwaukee’s senior product manager, Tyson Apfelbeck, says the company is bridging the gap between its small, more compact Hackzall and its full-size Sawzall performance for several key applications. These include large-diameter PVC, 2x dimensional lumber and EMT conduit. Apfelbeck adds that the tool offers a fast application speed as well as control and ergonomics.
